Islamabad, Feb 10: Pakistan’s sugar exports to Afghanistan have seen an extraordinary surge of 4,332% during the first seven months of the current financial year, jumping to $262.7 million compared to just $5.9 million in the same period last year. This growth has made sugar the largest commodity in Pakistan’s exports to Afghanistan.

The federal government had granted permission for the export of 750,000 metric tons of sugar between June and October 2024, and an additional 500,000 metric tons were approved for export in the final fortnight of October 2024.
This surge in exports comes at a time when sugar prices in Pakistan’s domestic market have also increased. Over the past 10 weeks, the average price of sugar has risen by Rs. 21.26 per kilogram. Currently, the average price stands at Rs. 153.11 per kg, with some areas reporting prices as high as Rs. 160 per kg. In comparison, the average price was Rs. 131.85 per kg ten weeks ago, according to official data.
