Islamabad, 13 May, 2025:  The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan has suspended the game of chess indefinitely, claiming it is linked to gambling and incompatible with their interpretation of Islamic principles.

Atal Mashwani, spokesperson for the Taliban’s sports directorate, told local media on Sunday that religious concerns underpin the decision.

He stated that chess is considered a form of gambling under Islamic Sharia law and will remain banned until these issues are resolved.

This decision is the latest in a series of sporting restrictions imposed since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.

The regime has already prohibited women from participating in sports and introduced limits on recreational activities across the country.

Last year, mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions were also banned. Taliban officials had argued that the violent nature of the sport clashed with Islamic teachings.

The move has drawn criticism from Afghan citizens and international observers who fear the country’s social and cultural fabric is being eroded.

Many argue that chess, a game with centuries of history in the region, promotes critical thinking and discipline rather than vice.

Local café owner Azizullah Gulzada said the chess ban has disheartened regular players and will likely harm his business.

He pointed out that young Afghans, already deprived of many freedoms, found in chess a peaceful and engaging pastime.

Gulzada also noted that chess continues to thrive in other Muslim-majority countries where it is not seen as conflicting with religious values, raising questions about the Taliban’s rigid stance.

As Afghanistan continues to grapple with increasing restrictions on personal freedoms, it remains uncertain when, or if, such bans will be reconsidered.

For many, the suspension of chess is yet another sign of a shrinking space for expression and leisure under the current regime.
