Islamabad, 24 March 2025: Former cricketer Tamim Iqbal suffered a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match in Savar.
Following the emergency, he underwent an angioplasty procedure and is now under observation in the coronary care unit (CCU).
The former opening batter regained consciousness after surgery and spoke with a family member; doctors will monitor him for 48 hours.
During the match, Tamim led Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club but left the field after experiencing chest discomfort.
He initially visited KPJ Specialised Hospital and Nursing Home for a check-up, but despite medical advice, he returned to the cricket ground.
Shortly after his return, his condition worsened. A family member arranged an air ambulance to transfer him to Dhaka, but he was unable to board due to severe health deterioration.
The Mohammedan team physio had to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before he was rushed back to the hospital.
Medical tests revealed arterial blockages, and cardiologist Dr. Moniruzzaman Maruf conducted the emergency angioplasty.
Hospital representatives later confirmed that Tamim had suffered a heart attack and received immediate medical attention.
Dr. Rajib Hasan of KPJ Hospital acknowledged the swift response of the medical team at the cricket venue, which helped expedite his treatment.
The chief physician in BCB Dr. Debashis Chowdhury assured that Tamim’s condition was stabilizing, with vital signs showing improvement.
Following the incident, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) postponed its scheduled directors’ meeting.
Several cricket officials, including President Faruque Ahmed and Chief Executive Nizamuddin Ahmed, visited the hospital.
His teammates, including Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah, also gathered at the facility to show their support.
Tamim, who retired from international cricket earlier this year, continues to play in domestic leagues. He recently led Fortune Barishal to a second consecutive BPL title and has been in fine form in the Dhaka Premier League.
