The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced that the Tarbela Dam spillways were opened at 8:00am on Monday to regulate rising water levels.

According to the NDMA, nearly 250,000 cusecs of water is now being discharged due to the opening of the spillways, raising concerns of possible flooding in the Indus River along with connected streams and drainage channels.

The authority has urged communities living near the riverbanks and low-lying zones to remain vigilant and avoid going close to water bodies. Residents have also been advised to fully cooperate with local officials and strictly follow safety instructions to minimize risks.

To ensure public safety, local administrations have been instructed to keep people continuously updated about the situation.

Earlier, the Flood Forecasting Division highlighted in its report that the Tarbela reservoir has reached its maximum conservation level of 1,550 feet, prompting the release of water.
