Islamabad, Oct 12: TikTok slashes hundreds of jobs in AI shift
The social media network TikTok announced that it will be switching to AI-assisted content moderation, which will result in the loss of hundreds of jobs, many of which are anticipated to be in Malaysia.
China-based ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, announced on Friday that it will be laying off several hundred employees globally, but it did not break down employment by nation.
In Malaysia, the change is anticipated to have an impact on fewer than 500 jobs.
A representative for TikTok slashes stated that the job losses were a result of an initiative to improve content management.
The spokesman added in a brief statement, “We expect to invest $2 billion globally in trust and safety in 2024 alone and are continuing to improve the efficacy of our efforts, with automated technologies now removing 80% of violative content.”
The organization reviews content uploaded on the network using a mix of automated detection and human moderators.
The reorganization comes after months of rumors that TikTok intended to drastically cut its marketing staff and worldwide operations.
ByteDance has more than 110,000 employees operating out of more than 200 cities worldwide, according to the corporate website.
The IT companies are also under more regulatory pressure in Malaysia, where there has been a rise in bad information on social media since early this year, as a result of the layoffs.
