Islamabad, Jan 15: Toyota is making waves in the automotive world with its innovative new four-cylinder turbocharged engine lineup, which promises to revolutionize the industry. According to Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima, this new engine is a “game changer,” with its 1.5 and 2.0-liter variants designed to prioritize both electrification and exceptional performance.
These engines cater to the growing demand for cleaner, more efficient vehicles while delivering thrilling driving experiences.
Lexus IS tested the engine, focusing on luxury and performance. At the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, the engine debuted in a mid-engine prototype based on the GR Yaris, attracting attention.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine has already made an impact.
Early reports suggest the 2.0-liter engine may produce upwards of 400 horsepower, with peak torque figures reaching 369 lb-ft (500 Nm), surpassing initial expectations. Toyota’s CTO even hinted that these figures could increase as the engine continues to evolve, further raising the bar for what consumers can expect.
One of the standout features of this engine is its versatility. You can install it in both transverse and longitudinal configurations, making it suitable for various Toyota models.

There are plans for a smaller version of the engine, delivering 300 PS (296 hp) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.
Toyota has also hinted at an unrestricted race version of the engine that could push the limits to over 600 horsepower, positioning it as a formidable competitor to other high-performance powertrains on the market.
Speculation suggests it could power the next-generation Supra, as well as the potential return of iconic models like the Celica and MR2.
The 2.0-liter engine will sit above the current 1.6-liter three-cylinder in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, solidifying its place as the flagship engine in Toyota’s performance-oriented lineup.
Lexus, Toyota’s luxury arm, will also benefit from this technology.
The future high-performance models will feature the new engine.
Additionally, rumors suggest that Lexus is developing a twin-turbo V8 for a car inspired by the brand’s successful GT3 race car.
This ambitious approach positions Toyota and Lexus as formidable contenders in the high-performance automotive segment.
