Islamabad, Aug 7, 2025: In a significant push toward modern public transport, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has unveiled plans to introduce the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART) system in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, following its successful testing phase in Lahore.

During a recent demonstration, CM Maryam Nawaz personally inspected the state-of-the-art electric SART train as it completed a test run between Raiwind Road and Muslim Town. This marks a major milestone, as Lahore becomes the first city in Pakistan to host a fully electric, trackless tram system.

Accompanied by Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, the chief minister received a detailed briefing on the tram’s features. Designed by global technology firm Norinco International, the SART system boasts modern electric mobility with climate-controlled coaches that can accommodate up to 320 passengers. There is also potential to add a fourth compartment, increasing its total capacity.

Onlookers were drawn to the scene as the sleek, noiseless tram glided through regular traffic, hinting at a cleaner, more efficient urban future. With a single battery charge, the SART vehicle can cover up to 40 kilometers, making it a practical and sustainable alternative to traditional public transport.

Already adopted in countries like Turkey, China, and the UAE, the SART project is set to revolutionize urban commuting in Punjab. The system aims to reduce traffic congestion, cut down emissions, and provide citizens with a safe and modern transport option.

Speaking at the event, Maryam Nawaz emphasized the broader vision behind the project:

“This is just the beginning. Our goal is to transform urban mobility across Punjab. After Lahore, the people of Faisalabad and Gujranwala can expect major improvements in their daily commute.”

The launch of the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART) system is more than just a new mode of transport — it’s a step forward in reshaping how Punjab moves toward a greener and smarter future.
