Islamabad, 28 May 2025: In a bold move to enhance road safety and enforce stricter traffic discipline across Punjab, the provincial government has sanctioned a tenfold increase in traffic fines.
This decisive step follows a high-level meeting led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, emphasizing urgent reforms to curb traffic violations and reduce accidents.
The new traffic fine policy is designed to send a strong message, especially targeting risky behaviors like one-wheeling and reckless driving, which will now attract stringent legal consequences including FIRs.
Importantly, the government has introduced a groundbreaking measure to hold parents or guardians legally accountable by registering criminal cases against those who allow underage individuals to drive.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the swift removal of road obstructions, particularly on critical arteries such as Bedian Road, to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
The administration plans a comprehensive overhaul of traffic infrastructure by redesigning 372 traffic intersections across Punjab and 77 within Lahore city. This initiative aims to significantly reduce congestion and improve commuter experience.
To promote fairness and transparency in enforcement, the government mandates that all traffic challans must be backed by clear video or photographic proof.
Additionally, hefty penalties will target motorists caught using mobile phones while driving and vehicles operating with faulty or non-functional headlights.

In a tech-driven approach, the installation of digital roadside screens will soon alert drivers about upcoming traffic jams, enabling them to plan alternate routes and avoid delays.
Another innovative proposal under consideration is the reorganization of the traffic police force into five specialized units, each tasked with distinct responsibilities, coupled with upgraded uniforms and state-of-the-art patrol equipment.

CM Maryam Nawaz stressed the urgency of these reforms, saying, “There’s still no visible improvement. We must act now.” Her firm stance highlights the administration’s commitment to transforming Punjab’s roads into safer spaces for all.
