The Punjab Chief Minister has approved a major increase in traffic fines to control violations across the province. Under the new policy, motorists and motorcyclists breaking traffic rules will now face higher penalties and even temporary suspension of their driving licenses.

According to officials from the traffic police, motorcyclists will be fined Rs 2,000 for every violation, while the maximum fine for serious offences has been raised to Rs 20,000. Drivers of vehicles with engines over 2000cc caught overspeeding will face a Rs 20,000 fine along with a deduction of four penalty points.

Every violation will now result in a deduction of two to four points. If a driver accumulates 20 points in a year, their license will be suspended for a period ranging from two months to one year.

At present, traffic fines range from Rs 100 to Rs 500, but the new policy significantly increases these penalties. For breaking a traffic signal or driving on the wrong side (one-way violation), offenders can be fined up to Rs 15,000. Overloading of vehicles will also carry a Rs 15,000 fine along with a deduction of four points.
