Islamabad, Mar 12 2025: A highly anticipated trial has commenced in Argentina to determine whether Diego Maradona’s medical team played a role in his death through negligence.
The football legend passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60 due to heart failure while recovering from brain surgery.
Seven medical professionals, including Maradona’s brain surgeon, psychiatrist, and nurses, appeared before a court in Buenos Aires, while an eighth will face a jury trial in July.
Prosecutors have accused them of “simple homicide with eventual intent,” arguing that the care provided to Maradona was reckless and inadequate.
Inside the courtroom, prosecutors described the medical treatment Maradona received as “calamitous” and alleged that his home recovery conditions were comparable to a “theatre of horror.”
They claimed that medical staff failed to follow standard protocols, which could have prevented his death.
Supporters gathered outside the court with banners demanding justice, while Maradona’s daughters, Dalma and Gianinna, attended the hearing in silence.
His former partner, Veronica Ojeda, expressed gratitude to those seeking accountability.
The defence has rejected claims of negligence, arguing that Maradona’s death was the result of an unforeseeable cardiac event rather than medical malpractice. If convicted, the accused could face prison terms ranging from eight to 25 years.
