Islamabad, July 24, 2025: The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has officially sanctioned transformative infrastructure projects to enhance air travel facilities nationwide, including the elevation of Sukkur and Dera Ismail Khan airports to international standards.

During a recent board meeting, the Pakistan Airports Authority gave the green signal for the expansion of Sukkur Airport, including an extended runway to accommodate international flights. Meanwhile, Dera Ismail Khan Airport is set for a complete overhaul, with plans to rebuild it into a state-of-the-art aviation hub.

In parallel, Rahim Yar Khan Airport will see significant upgrades. The approved plan includes infrastructure renovations and runway extensions, aimed at improving passenger experience and boosting regional connectivity.

New Airport Under Consideration in Mirpur

Alongside these approved projects, the federal government is also reviewing a proposal to construct a new airport in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The final decision will be made after completing a detailed feasibility study.

The proposed Mirpur airport has long been a demand of the overseas Pakistani community, particularly those from the United Kingdom. In support of this initiative, several British Members of Parliament of Kashmiri descent recently wrote to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging swift action on the matter.

These developments reflect a broader strategy by the Pakistan Airports Authority to modernize the country’s aviation sector, enhance travel convenience, and accommodate the growing demand for air travel.
