Islamabad, Mar 28, 2025: The UAE’s Central Bank (CBUAE) has unveiled a fresh emblem for the Dirham, the nation’s official currency, as part of its strategy to reinforce the UAE’s stature as a leading financial center.

The revamped Dirham symbol, modeled after the English letter “D,” incorporates two parallel lines that signify financial stability, drawing inspiration from the UAE flag.

This new insignia aims to bolster the Dirham’s global presence and enhance its recognition in international markets.

Furthermore, the Digital Dirham—the electronic form of the currency—will showcase a circular motif infused with the colors of the UAE flag, symbolizing national identity and the country’s commitment to financial modernization.

As part of its Financial Infrastructure Transformation (FIT) Programme initiated in 2023, the CBUAE has also shared updates on the Digital Dirham.

The government will introduce this digital currency for retail transactions by the end of 2025 to enhance financial accessibility, security, and operational efficiency.

Blockchain technology powers the Digital Dirham, lowering transaction costs, fortifying data security, and strengthening risk management practices.

It will hold legal status as an official mode of payment, complementing physical banknotes.

Licensed financial institutions, such as banks, exchange firms, and fintech companies, will facilitate access to this digital currency, ensuring seamless integration within the financial ecosystem.

To complement the Digital Dirham, the CBUAE has developed an advanced digital platform featuring a dedicated Digital Dirham wallet.

This platform will support various financial functions, including retail and wholesale payments, cross-border transactions, fund transfers, cash withdrawals, and digital top-ups.

Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the CBUAE, emphasized the significance of these developments, stating: “The introduction of the new Dirham emblem and Digital Dirham wallet represents a pivotal advancement in the UAE’s financial landscape, moving us toward a more secure, efficient, and technology-driven economic framework.”
