MULTAN, Jun 14: Misbah Khar, Advisor to Chairman Senate, and Industrialist Ghulam M. Yahya Khar led a UN delegation to the Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator to Pakistan, Mohammad Yahya, said on Saturday that South Punjab had immense economic potential and the UN was extending support in various sectors to uplift the region’s infrastructure.

Addressing a ceremony at the Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Yahya stated that the UN’s 4,000 personnel were working across Pakistan. He noted that South Punjab, as an agriculture hub, was benefiting from FAO’s efforts to promote agriculture, and the UN was also supporting youth skill development. “South Punjab is an important geographical area, and the UN will continue its support in tackling challenges related to climate change, technology, agriculture, and other sectors,” he added. He invited MCCI members to visit Islamabad to jointly campaign for increased investment in the region.

Ms. Fernanda Thomaz, IFAD representative, said IFAD was contributing to poverty alleviation in 10 districts of South Punjab, providing livestock to 400,000 poor women, houses to 7,300 landless women, and operating 40 community food banks that support 30,000 households.President Multan Chamber of Commerce Bakhtawar Tanvir Sheikh gave a briefing on overall south Punjab, mentioning various challenges in agriculture, industry, climate change, girl education, poverty and other sectors. He also hailed Chairman Senate Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani for ensuring mega development projects in the region. He urged the UN to pay further focus on south Punjab as it was lagging behind many other areas of the country. He also mentioned different uplift projects, developed after recommendation of Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Advisor to Chairman Senate, Misbah Khar, and Yahya Khar emphasized the importance of promoting girls’ education and improving healthcare in South Punjab, urging stronger partnerships to address these critical areas.

MCCI President Bakhtawar Tanvir Sheikh provided an introduction of the MCCI. Additionally, Ata Tanveer Sheikh, Senator Rana Mehmood ul Hassan, MCCI Vice President Muhammad Azhar Baloch, and other notables were also present.
