The U.S. State Department has confirmed that more than 55 million foreigners holding valid U.S. visas are under continuous vetting, even after being admitted into the country.
According to officials, this system allows the department to revoke visas at any time if new information suggests the holder is ineligible to remain in the United States. Grounds for revocation may include overstays, criminal records, threats to public safety, or links to terrorist activities and organizations.
The monitoring applies to all visa categories, from tourist to student and exchange visas. If red flags are identified, the visa can be canceled immediately. For individuals already inside the U.S., this could lead to removal proceedings or deportation.
The State Department noted that the vetting process has become far broader than in previous years, ensuring stricter checks on foreign nationals. Officials admit the process is time-consuming but emphasize it is designed to protect national security.
