US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the United States is keeping a close watch on the Pakistan-India situation despite the halt in hostilities under a ceasefire agreement following the recent deadly conflict between the two rival countries.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday, Rubio highlighted the fragility of ceasefire arrangements in conflict zones, stressing how easily such truces can collapse. “Every single day we keep an eye on what’s happening between Pakistan and India, what’s happening between Cambodia and Thailand. Ceasefires can fall apart very quickly, especially after a three-and-a-half-year [Russia-Ukraine] war like what we’re facing now,” he said.

He noted that while Washington continues to push for a truce in Ukraine, permanent peace requires a negotiated settlement rather than a temporary pause in hostilities.

Earlier this year, Pakistan and India narrowly avoided a major escalation. On May 7, Indian forces carried out airstrikes on Pakistani territory under the banner of “Operation Sindoor,” drawing strong condemnation from Islamabad. Pakistan responded with “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos,” striking multiple Indian military sites, downing six fighter jets including three Rafales, and destroying dozens of drones.

The confrontation, which lasted 87 hours, came to an end after US mediation. Former President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire, claiming credit for defusing the crisis. While India downplayed Washington’s role, Pakistan publicly acknowledged Trump’s efforts and even recommended him for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

Meanwhile, security sources revealed that India has since launched “Operation Mahadev,” a covert campaign aimed at staging fake encounters and framing illegally detained Pakistanis as cross-border militants, in an attempt to conceal battlefield setbacks and suppress the Kashmiri freedom movement.
