USA is pressuring European Union states to impose sanctions on India over its continued imports of Russian oil, media outlets reported over the weekend. The move comes just days after the United States announced 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods in retaliation for New Delhi’s energy dealings with Moscow.
According to Axios and India Today, the White House wants the EU to implement measures mirroring U.S. policy, including a complete halt to Russian oil and gas imports and the introduction of secondary tariffs not only on India but also on China. Officials told the outlets that Washington is growing frustrated with European leaders, accusing them of dragging their feet on sanctions while resisting concessions in the Ukraine war.
The trade dispute has already strained U.S.-India relations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has rejected the tariffs as “unjustified,” insisting India must secure affordable energy supplies for its population. Indian officials also accused the West of double standards, pointing out that some EU members continue limited trade with Russia.

Analysts say Washington’s push for EU coordination could further complicate global trade and may drive India closer to Russia and China, undermining Western efforts to isolate Moscow.
