Islamabad, Apr 3, 2025: Elon Musk’s budget reduction task force is nearing completion in dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Dawn cites reports from former high-ranking USAID officials indicating that the government will dismiss thousands of local employees, American diplomats, and civil servants stationed overseas.
On Friday, Congress received notification that almost all USAID personnel will face termination by September.
The agency’s foreign offices will be closed and select responsibilities will be transferred to the State Department.
This restructuring, spearheaded by Musk’s Government Efficiency Division, will effectively dissolve USAID’s existing workforce.

“This is the final phase of shutting down,” remarked a former senior official of the agency.
President Donald Trump initiated the process of merging USAID’s functions into the State Department in February.
Appointing Musk to spearhead governmental spending reductions aligned with his “America First” agenda. The State Department has yet to issue a formal response regarding these developments.
Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that USAID’s human resources department held a conference call to inform regional offices that they would distribute termination notices to more than 10,000 locally employed foreign nationals.
Their employment contracts will officially end in August.
One former official highlighted concern that such actions might violate employment regulations in host countries.
Additionally, the authorities will dispatch official notices to U.S. diplomats and civil servants affiliated with USAID.
The agency, recognized as America’s leading foreign aid provider for over six decades, now faces an abrupt dissolution.
Trump has repeatedly accused USAID of corruption—without substantiating evidence—and labeled it as being dominated by “radical left extremists.”
Meanwhile, Musk has erroneously characterized the organization as a “criminal enterprise.”
“As a consequence of the agency’s shutdown, the management placed thousands of employees on administrative leave and sent termination notifications to many on Friday.
Furthermore, the agency terminated hundreds of contractors and discontinued over 5,000 aid initiatives.”
The sudden halt of USAID operations poses a severe threat to crucial humanitarian assistance programs that millions of vulnerable individuals rely upon worldwide.
USAID has maintained a presence in more than 60 nations, directing a substantial portion of its funding toward humanitarian relief efforts and global health initiatives.
The agency’s dissolution is expected to create significant disruptions in international aid distribution and diplomatic relations.
