Islamabad, Mar 15 2025: Former India captain Virat Kohli has voiced his disappointment over the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) latest rule limiting the time cricketers can spend with their families during international tours.
Speaking at the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit, Kohli remarked that those implementing such regulations might not understand the importance of family presence for players.
He explained that returning to loved ones after intense matches helps players stay grounded. However, he felt that decisions on such matters were being made by those who lack insight into their impact.
Kohli, who has often been accompanied by his wife, actress Anushka Sharma, and their children during tours, suggested that rule-makers who do not comprehend these aspects should not be involved in such discussions.
These new regulations, along with others such as mandatory team bus travel, were introduced following India’s 3-1 loss to Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The defeat was sealed in the final Test when India played without the injured Jasprit Bumrah.
Kohli also addressed the curiosity of his fans regarding his reduced presence on social media. He stated that sharing personal achievements online does not add value to his happiness.
The cricketer explained that posting about a win does not change reality or bring additional success.
He further highlighted that technology can be a distraction if not used with a purpose. Having grown up in an era without smartphones, he found it easier to disconnect.
Avoiding excessive social media engagement, he said, allows him to conserve energy for his game and personal life. Kohli is set to return to action in IPL 2025 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
