Islamabad, Mar 12 2025: Twitter/X Disturbed by a “Massive Cyberattack”. Just a day after X (formerly Twitter) suffered a widespread outage, preventing users in Pakistan and across the globe from accessing the platform.
New insights suggest the disruption may not have been caused by a foreign cyberattack, as Elon Musk initially claimed.
Earlier reports, highlighted a surge in outage complaints around 1:45 PM Pakistan time, as seen on Downdetector. Many users encountered difficulties in loading posts, profiles.
Timelines. Musk had quickly attributed the incident to a Twitter/X Disturbed by a “massive cyberattack,” suggesting the involvement of either a nation-state or a well-coordinated group. He later claimed the attack’s IP addresses traced back to the Ukraine region.
However, cybersecurity analysts are casting doubt on that explanation. A report by Wired cites multiple security experts who found no substantial evidence linking Ukraine to the alleged attack.
One researcher even stated that Ukraine did not appear among the top 20 countries associated with the DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) traffic.

Further investigations indicate that X’s own infrastructure might have been the actual cause of the disruption. Security professionals discovered that X’s origin servers were temporarily exposed.
left unprotected by Cloudflare’s DDoS mitigation system, allowing potential attackers to target them directly. The company has since taken corrective measures to secure its servers.
This isn’t the first time Musk has pointed to mysterious cyberattacks following platform failures. Last year, when X faced technical issues during a livestream featuring Donald Trump, Musk made similar claims only for fact-checkers to later debunk them.
As of now, X has not provided an official statement clarifying the exact cause of the outage. However, emerging evidence strongly suggests that the disruption resulted from technical vulnerabilities rather than a foreign cyberattack.
Fortunately, the platform appears to be functioning normally once again.
