Islamabad, 24 March 2025: A high school basketball coach was dismissed after a video surfaced showing him pulling a player’s ponytail during a championship game.
Northville head coach Jim Zullo was seen in the footage grabbing the hair of senior player Hailey Monroe following a loss to LaFargeville in the Class D girls’ basketball final at Hudson Valley Community College.
The incident occurred moments after Monroe had fouled out of the game.
Her teammate, Ahmya Tompkins, quickly intervened, confronting Zullo as he appeared visibly frustrated. The video of the altercation has since gained widespread attention.
In response, the Northville Central School District issued a statement expressing strong disapproval of Zullo’s actions.
The district emphasized its commitment to maintaining professionalism, sportsmanship, and respect within its sports programs.
The statement further confirmed that Zullo would no longer be part of the coaching staff.
Officials have launched an investigation into the matter, leading to Zullo’s immediate dismissal. The coach, who came out of retirement in 2023, had guided Northville to the state championship in 2024.
Previously, he had built a successful coaching career spanning decades, beginning in the 1970s. His achievements earned him an induction into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Before the title game, Zullo had spoken highly of the team’s dedication and hard work throughout the year. However, the unexpected nature of the incident has left many in the community shocked.
