The 4th of July is the day when America become free from British rule. Long ago, Britain had the American colonies under their control. The British government placed heavy taxes on them, which made the colonists angry. They had to pay taxes but had no authority in making any decision. Protests broke out, including the famous Boston Tea Party. Fighting later started in 1775 between the colonists and British soldiers.

In July 1776, after many meetings, American leaders decided to break away from Britain. On July 4, they officially signed the Declaration of Independence. America’s battle for freedom finally ended in 1783 when they won the war.
