Islamabad, Feb 1: WhatsApp has successfully disrupted a sophisticated surveillance operation that targeted over 90 individuals, including journalists and civil society activists. The attack, which raised serious privacy concerns, was traced back to Israeli cyber intelligence firm Paragon Solutions.
According to WhatsApp officials, the company moved swiftly upon detecting the breach and has directly contacted the affected users, warning them of potential device compromise. WhatsApp expressed “high confidence” that the victims were deliberately targeted and has since issued a cease-and-desist order against Paragon Solutions, with further legal action under consideration.
Paragon Solutions, which presents itself as an “ethical” cybersecurity firm, has been viewed as a rival to the notorious NSO Group, a company previously accused of enabling state-sponsored cyber surveillance. Recent developments surrounding Paragon include its acquisition by Florida-based AE Industrial Partners and a $2 million contract with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in September 2024.

This incident draws striking parallels to WhatsApp’s previous legal battle against NSO Group in 2019, when the messaging giant sued the company over a surveillance campaign that compromised 1,400 users, including government officials and activists. That case resulted in a landmark ruling against NSO Group, reinforcing the legal stance against unauthorized digital espionage.
With growing concerns over spyware misuse, WhatsApp’s crackdown on Paragon Solutions underscores the ongoing fight for digital security and user privacy. The company remains committed to safeguarding its platform from state-backed surveillance operations and unauthorized intrusions.
