Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to oppose “hegemonism and power politics” while working toward a more balanced international system.
Speaking at the SCO leaders’ summit in Tianjin on Monday, Xi stressed the need to uphold the “Shanghai Spirit” of mutual trust, equality, and shared development.
He urged members to reject “Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation, and bullying practices,” a veiled criticism of US and Western policies. Xi said the SCO should push for a multipolar world, inclusive globalization, and reforms to make global governance more just and equitable.
Highlighting the bloc’s growing role, Xi noted that the SCO’s collective economic output has reached $30 trillion, while China’s trade with member states has surpassed $2.3 trillion. He pledged deeper cooperation in education, technology, and innovation, emphasizing projects under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Xi also encouraged greater cultural exchanges and people-to-people connectivity among SCO members to strengthen unity while respecting national differences.
