Islamabad, Sep 26: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to present his plans for increased U.S. support to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris during his visit to the White House on Thursday.
This visit comes amidst a backdrop of rising tensions related to the U.S. presidential election, particularly regarding the role of former President Donald Trump, who has recently criticized Zelensky and questioned the rationale behind continued U.S. financial support for Ukraine.
Zelensky’s meeting with Biden is expected to include the announcement of a surge in U.S. security assistance, although it remains unclear if he will secure approval for Ukraine to use U.S.-made long-range missiles against Russian targets.
Tensions escalated as Trump, who is currently a Republican presidential contender, accused Zelensky of refusing to negotiate with Moscow and criticized ongoing U.S. financial support.
Trump referred to Zelensky as “probably the greatest salesman on Earth,” expressing frustration over what he perceives as a lack of diplomatic efforts from the Ukrainian leader.
Zelensky’s address at the UN General Assembly aimed to rally international support amid challenges on the battlefield, and he has been promoting his so-called “victory plan” for resolving the conflict, although details remain sparse.
As the U.S. election approaches, concerns about the future of American support for Ukraine loom large, especially as Trump has suggested he could broker a peace deal rapidly if elected, a scenario that Kyiv fears could involve territorial concessions.
