Islamabad, May 6, 2025: Zhao Xintong made history on Monday by becoming the first Chinese and Asian player to win the World Snooker Championship.
He defeated Wales’ Mark Williams 18-12 in a gripping final at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre.
The 28-year-old had entered the final session with a commanding 17-8 lead and needed just one frame to lift the trophy.
However, Williams refused to bow out quietly, mounting a late surge by winning four consecutive frames, including a century in the 26th, to cut the lead to 17-12.

Just as momentum seemed to shift, Zhao held his nerve in the 30th frame. A composed break of 87 secured the victory and sealed his place in the sport’s history books.
His overall performance was remarkable, producing two century breaks — 100 and 104 — along with 11 breaks over 50 during the match.
Zhao expressed disbelief and joy after the win, calling it a dream come true. He described the past month as an exciting journey, filled with challenges and unforgettable moments.
Williams, 50, praised Zhao’s talent and calmness under pressure, remarking that the Chinese player had outclassed not just him, but also Ronnie O’Sullivan earlier in the tournament.

The Welshman noted that snooker had found its next superstar and predicted a dominant future for Zhao in the sport.
Zhao’s remarkable journey to the title saw him return as an amateur after a 20-month ban, win four qualifiers, and shock seven-time champion O’Sullivan 17-7 in the semi-finals.
His victory is being hailed as a turning point for snooker in Asia, particularly in China, where interest in the sport has steadily grown.
Zhao’s breakthrough is expected to inspire a new generation of players from the region.
