Islamabad, June 25, 2025: In a stunning turn of events, 33-year-old state lawmaker Zohran Mamdani is on track to win New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. With nearly 95% of scanners reporting, Mamdani led with 43.5%, ahead of Cuomo’s 36.4%. The outcome remains unofficial due to the city’s ranked-choice system, but Mamdani’s margin appears decisive.

Cuomo, 67, conceded the race and congratulated Mamdani, saying, “Tonight is his night.” Seeking a political return after resigning in 2021 over sexual harassment claims, Cuomo faced criticism from many voters who were unwilling to look past the allegations, despite his denials.

Zohran Mamdani, who represents Queens in the State Assembly, began the race as a long shot. A Ugandan-born politician of Indian descent, he could become NYC’s first Muslim mayor. His campaign gained momentum with endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

While final results are expected next week due to ranked-choice voting, Mamdani’s lead may grow. Brad Lander, who finished third, had urged his backers to rank Mamdani second — a strategy that could tip the balance further.

Some voters welcomed the change. “It’s time for someone younger, a person of color, something different,” said Ignacio Tambunting, a 28-year-old actor. Others rejected Cuomo outright. “I’m not voting for someone accused of harassment,” said Leah Johanson, 39, in Queens.

For Mamdani, this marks a moment of political transformation — both personal and citywide.
