Confirming recent speculations, Apple has officially announced its partnership with OpenAI during its recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). This collaboration brings various AI features to iOS 18, including direct integration of ChatGPT into Siri.

Apple refers to these AI features as “Apple Intelligence,” with enhancements aimed at making Siri smarter and more personalized to boost productivity. Users will have access to ChatGPT through Siri, and it doesn’t stop there. ChatGPT is seamlessly integrated into system-wide writing tools, enriching the user experience across the platform. Over the next year, Siri will gain on-screen awareness, allowing users to control apps through the assistant, akin to the promises made by Rabbit’s R1 AI voice assistant device, which received largely negative feedback and was even accused of being a scam. However, Apple is likely to successfully deliver on this promise, unlike Rabbit.

Investors have been closely monitoring this year’s WWDC, eager to see Apple’s strategy for leveraging generative AI amid concerns that the company is falling behind its Big Tech competitors.

Major players in the tech industry, such as Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta, are fiercely competing to develop new AI-powered products. They are also either rivaling or collaborating with startups focused on this technology. Microsoft, notably, has invested heavily in OpenAI and has become the world’s most valuable company, surpassing Apple. Chipmaker giant Nvidia has also recently overtaken Apple to become the second most valuable company.
