Islamabad, 28 April 2025: BCCI is seriously considering expanding the IPL to a 94-match season starting in 2028, although there are currently no plans to introduce new teams.

The IPL grew to 74 matches in 2022 after the addition of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.

There were discussions about increasing the number to 84 matches by 2025, but concerns over a packed schedule and broadcaster fatigue delayed those plans.

For now, the tournament’s window in the ICC Future Tours Programme remains set from mid-March to the end of May for the next two years.

Speaking to the media, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal indicated that a full home-and-away 94-match format could be introduced when the next media rights cycle begins.

He explained that the growing popularity of franchise cricket and changing fan interest have led the board to rethink the tournament’s future structure.

Dhumal noted that while the current 74-game format works well, a bigger season would allow every team to play each other both home and away, creating more value for fans, players, and broadcasters.

However, he admitted that immediate changes are unlikely due to the packed international calendar.

During next year’s FTP discussions, the length of the IPL season is expected to be a major topic. Some team officials have already shown support for a longer tournament.

However, broadcasters will have a big say in the decision, especially after the recent merger between Reliance and Disney to form JioStar.

While investor interest remains high, Dhumal confirmed that BCCI is not looking to add more franchises yet, saying that 10 teams are enough for now to maintain the tournament’s quality.

Reflecting on the current season, Dhumal praised the level of competition and the emergence of young Indian talent.

He expressed hope that a first-time champion, such as Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, or Royal Challengers Bengaluru, might lift the trophy this year.
