ISLAMABAD: The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has taken proactive steps to address the rising concerns of anti-competitive practices and deceptive marketing in online marketplaces.
In recent meetings, the CCP engaged with two major digital platforms, PakWheels and OLX Pakistan, to ensure a fair and transparent environment in the fast-evolving digital economy.
The discussions, led by Mr. Salman Amin, Member Office of Fair Trade (OFT), included the management teams of PakWheels and SMC Private Limited (OLX Pakistan).
The key focus of the engagement was on promoting fair competition, safeguarding consumer interests, and curbing deceptive practices in online platforms.
PakWheels Engagement:
The meeting with PakWheels, led by Mr. Suneel Munj and his team, covered the platform’s expanded services, such as auto-financing, insurance, and vehicle verification.
During this session, the CCP raised concerns about misleading claims in promotional campaigns, particularly those related to third-party services like financing, auto parts, oils, and insurance.
Both parties agreed to collaborate on creating sector-specific guidelines aimed at improving transparency, consumer protection, and compliance.
Additionally, the CCP stressed the importance of closely monitoring promotional claims related to electric vehicles, bikes, and scooters.
OLX Engagement:
The engagement with OLX Pakistan revolved around addressing misleading advertisements, fake job postings, fraudulent schemes, and multi-level marketing scams.
The CCP emphasized the need for stronger redressal mechanisms to protect consumers from such practices.
It was agreed that OLX would clearly display information on prohibited practices under the Competition Act, 2010, and take steps to encourage self-regulation and user compliance.
Furthermore, OLX committed to promptly removing flagged content and improving transparency on its platform.
Ongoing Efforts:
The CCP remains committed to fostering open and fair competition in all sectors, including the growing digital economy.
Recently, the CCP imposed penalties in the automobile sector for deceptive marketing practices and other violations of the Competition Act, reinforcing its dedication to maintaining market integrity.
By engaging with major digital platforms like PakWheels and OLX, the CCP continues to work towards strengthening consumer protection, promoting fair practices, and ensuring a level playing field in Pakistan’s digital marketplace.
