Amidst an ongoing heat wave, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has declared a surge in daily water provision by six million gallons to cater to the escalating demands of Islamabad’s residents.
The decision came following directives from the CDA Chairman during a meeting convened to assess the water supply scenario in the federal capital. Senior officers from the Water Supply Wing were present at the gathering.
Acknowledging the heightened water requirements of citizens during the summer, the Chairman announced an additional allocation of six million gallons per day (MGD) from Simli Dam. He emphasized extending the duration of water supply in densely populated sectors and areas to ensure ample availability.
In a bid to ensure effective execution of these measures, the Chairman mandated the cancellation of all leaves for water supply wing personnel. Moreover, the tanker service will remain on high alert 24/7 to address immediate water needs, while reported pipeline leakages are to be swiftly repaired.
The meeting also prioritized long-term solutions to Islamabad’s water challenges. Immediate commencement of projects related to Shahdara, Tarbela, Chiniot, and Khanpur dams was instructed, aiming for a sustainable resolution to the city’s water supply woes.
Expressing concern over the theft of approximately 40 percent of water from Khanpur Dam to the Sangjani Plant Canal, the Chairman underscored the complexity of the issue, noting jurisdictional challenges with various provincial authorities. He called for a proposal within three days to engage in discussions with WAPDA and other relevant organizations to address this concern effectively.
