ISLAMABAD, JULY17: According to Chief Meteorologist Dr. Sardar Sarfraz, Pakistan’s rapidly increasing population is making climate change problems worse. He urged the country to declare a climate emergency and emphasized the critical roles that the public and corporate sectors as well as religious leaders must play in resolving the issue.
Speaking at a seminar titled “The Impact of Growing Population on Climate Change,” Dr. Sarfraz was a guest of the Global Awareness and Empowerment Network and the Skills Development Committee of the Karachi Press Club.
During the seminar, Saeeda Sheikh, the director of the social welfare department, Mehnaz Rehman, an activist, Yasir Hussain, the head of the Climate Action Center, environmental specialist Naeem Qureshi, and other participants shared their worries and recommendations.
Dr. Sarfraz linked population expansion and deforestation to the rising temperatures. According to him, there has been a rise in temperature of 1.5 degrees Celsius since 1850, and future estimates suggest that this trend will continue. Due to the negative effects on snowfall patterns in mountainous areas and the disruption of rainfall cycles, early mitigation measures are required.
