Islamabad, Jan 28: Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, a rising star in the tech world, recently announced a temporary pause on new user registrations after falling victim to a major cyberattack. While this breach caused some disruption, the company assured that existing users could still access their accounts and expressed appreciation for their continued support.

Founded in late 2023 by hedge fund manager Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek has quickly carved out a space in the competitive AI market with its innovative models like DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1, which offer powerful alternatives to industry giants at a fraction of the cost.

DeepSeek-V3, for example, was trained using about $6 million in computing resources, leveraging Nvidia’s H800 chips for maximum efficiency. This has allowed DeepSeek’s AI Assistant to surpass even ChatGPT in terms of popularity on the U.S. App Store, signaling its growing influence.

However, the cyberattack caused interruptions in some services, including login failures and account issues. Although the chat service was restored by 20:55 UTC+8 on January 27, some users still faced challenges accessing or signing up for their accounts.

Beyond technical challenges, DeepSeek’s impressive progress has had far-reaching implications. Its rapid rise has led to a shift in how global markets view U.S. dominance in AI, with concerns about the impact of export restrictions on AI chips.

As DeepSeek gained momentum, major American tech companies such as Nvidia, Microsoft, and Alphabet saw their market values shrink dramatically, erasing over $1.2 trillion from the stock market.

Despite these setbacks, DeepSeek continues to track the situation and promises to provide regular updates as it works through these challenges.
