Islamabad, Sep 18: Discord, a leading group chat app with 200 million monthly users, announced that it will implement end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for its audio and video calls.

This move ensures that even Discord itself will not have access to the content of users’ conversations.

End-to-end encryption has evolved from a niche technology to a standard feature in major chat apps such as iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal, and Facebook Messenger.

Originally focused on gaming communities, Discord has expanded its appeal to a broader audience, valuing secure communication as a key enhancement.

The migration to E2EE will cover voice and video calls in direct messages, group DMs, voice channels, and Go Live streams. Users will be able to verify when calls are encrypted and confirm the identity of participants.

This update reflects Discord’s commitment to enhancing privacy and security for its users, aligning with the growing emphasis on protecting digital communication.

“Safety is intertwined with our product and policies. While audio and video will be end-to-end encrypted, messages on Discord will continue to follow our content moderation approach and are not end-to-end encrypted,” wrote Birarda.
