Islamabad, Apr 10, 2025: In a significant step forward for organ transplantation in Pakistan, Dow University Hospital has successfully performed its 190th liver transplant, with the guidance of global medical professionals.

The intricate procedure involved a 23-year-old donor, who donated a 750-gram segment of his liver to his 42-year-old uncle.

Both individuals are reportedly recovering well after the surgery.

The operation began early Wednesday morning and continued into the evening.

Dow University streamed the entire procedure live from the operating room to the seminar hall and broadcast it through the university’s official website and social media, providing a valuable learning experience for numerous medical students and trainees.

Distinguished international surgeons, including Professor John LaMattina, who has previously visited Pakistan, and Professor John Fung, who visited the country for the first time, oversaw the surgery.

Both surgeons are associated with the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine.

 The professors shared their expertise with Dow’s liver transplant team, led by Dr. Jehanzaib Haider, offering insights into advanced surgical methods and current global practices in liver transplantation.

However, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy, Vice Chancellor of Dow University, congratulated the team on the successful transplant and thanked the international experts for their contributions.

Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Jehan Ara Hassan, who was present during the live session, provided details about the recipient.

The 42-year-old patient from Shahdadkot had been suffering from liver failure due to chronic hepatitis B and D infections.

His 23-year-old nephew courageously donated a portion of his liver, enabling the successful transplant.

Professor Hassan emphasized that, with the support of the Sindh government, Dow University has now performed 190 liver transplants, all at no cost to the patients.

She also noted that religious and cultural views influence organ donation in Pakistan.

In response, Dow University is planning to establish an organ donation bank to enhance access and awareness.

Additionally, Professor Hassan announced that Dow University of Health Sciences will host Pakistan’s inaugural International Conference on Transplantation later this week.
