Islamabad, Oct 7: Ex-federal minister Dr. Gohar Ejaz announced a plan on Monday aimed at reducing electricity prices by Rs. 14 per unit.
He suggested converting contracts of 40 Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to a Take-and-Pay model, which allows for payments based solely on the electricity actually generated.
Key Points of the Proposal
- Projected Savings: This shift could potentially save Pakistani consumers Rs. 1 trillion or Rs. 9.70 per unit.
- Reduction in Additional Charges: The expected reduction in electricity prices will also lead to a decrease in associated charges like Distribution and Taxes, contributing an additional Rs. 4 per unit to the overall savings.
- Total Savings: The total anticipated savings for all consumers could reach Rs. 14 per unit.
Dr. Ejaz noted that the Task Force has conducted thorough investigations and analyses, and negotiations with IPPs are currently underway. This initiative is particularly significant for domestic consumers, commercial industries, and farmers across Pakistan, who are eagerly awaiting this much-needed relief in tariffs.
