Islamabad, Feb 24: This two-day meeting for the Networking of Water Centers of Excellence in OIC Member States marks a significant step toward collective action for sustainable water management. Organized by OIC-COMSTECH and the OIC General Secretariat, in collaboration with the Hisaar Foundation, SESRIC, and INWADARM, the initiative seeks to strengthen research, knowledge sharing, and coordinated policy efforts among member states.

The initiative aligns with Resolution No. 1/4-ICWM/2018 from the 4th Islamic Conference of Ministers Responsible for Water in Cairo and builds on the recommendations of the 2nd OIC Water Council meeting in 2019.

Key speakers at the meeting emphasized the urgency of addressing water challenges, particularly in the face of climate change. Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, stressed the importance of strong policy frameworks, regional cooperation, and investment in research and development.

Ambassador Aftab Ahmad Khokar, Assistant Secretary-General of OIC for Science and Technology, reaffirmed the OIC’s commitment to collaborative research and policy initiatives for water security.

Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of COMSTECH, highlighted major initiatives, including plans for expert mobility programs, training workshops in Bangladesh and Uganda, and research advancements in water management. He also noted COMSTECH’s broader support programs, such as scholarships, women scientist initiatives, and the Health Africa program.

Other speakers, including Dr. Zehra Zumrut from SESRIC and Dr. Marwan Alraggad from INWADARM, underscored the importance of data-driven policies and integrated water resource management strategies. Ms. Afia Salam from the Hisaar Foundation shared insights into innovative water conservation techniques.

The meeting gathered policymakers, researchers, and representatives from water centers of excellence across OIC member states, highlighting a collective commitment to tackling water-related challenges through science, technology, and policy collaboration. Discussions will continue into Tuesday, with a focus on policy recommendations and strategic actions for sustainable water management in the coming years.
