Islamabad, Aug 21: A television broadcaster reported on Wednesday that the government of Sindh had chosen to acknowledge fishermen as workers.
Fishermen will now be able to take advantage of labor rules, which include social security programs.
Millions of fishermen in Sindh’s coastal region rely on fishing for a living, therefore this area would be most affected.
The Chief Minister has received a summary from the Department of Livestock and Fisheries suggesting this modification.
Presently, the Fisheries Department and the Fish Harbour Authority have about 100,000 registered fishermen.
If the summary is accepted, the Sindh government would change the labor rules to formally designate fishermen as workers. The report will be addressed at the next Sindh Cabinet meeting.
