Islamabad, Nov 22: The Regional Tax Office (RTO) in Islamabad closed five well-known restaurants on Thursday for issuing fraudulent invoices.
The action followed complaints from consumers and aligns with the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) initiative to incorporate Tier-1 retailers and restaurants into the tax system through the Point of Sale (POS) invoicing system.
As per the FBR, the fake invoices were verified through POS tracking software under an established procedure. A team, led by the Deputy Commissioner, subsequently sealed the restaurants and imposed a cumulative fine of Rs. 1.5 million.
The FBR has also introduced the Point-of-Sale Prize Scheme, which began on October 25, starting with Tier-1 restaurants in Islamabad.
The program will expand to all Tier-1 retailers nationwide by the end of the month. Under this scheme, citizens who report fake invoices through the Tax Asaan App can receive cash rewards.
Once verified, the FBR will transfer the prize money directly to the whistleblower’s bank account, while establishments issuing fraudulent receipts will be penalized and sealed.
This initiative aims to eradicate the practice of issuing fake invoices and ensure proper tax contributions to the national exchequer.
The FBR highlighted its ongoing commitment to curbing tax evasion and promoting financial transparency in businesses.
