Islamabad, Sep 6: Shabbir Ahmed, a former Test cricket player for Pakistan, has resigned from his position as head coach of Dera Ghazi Khan’s cricket team. He highlighted widespread nepotism in domestic cricket as his main reason for leaving.
Shabbir bemoaned in a statement how, in spite of their diligence and hard work, deserving players are frequently left out because of partiality.
Shabbir bemoaned the lack of response from management, saying, “A boy works hard for a whole year, but then someone with connections takes his place.” “Teams like Bangladesh are outperforming us in cricket because our game has deteriorated to that extent.”
His resignation coincides with a period of increasing scrutiny around Pakistani cricket, especially in the wake of the team’s crushing 2-0 loss to Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.
While acknowledging the help he got from friends and other grassroots activists, Shabbir said he was discouraged by the situation of domestic cricket. “I felt hurt and was really disappointed. So, I made the decision to step down,” he said.
Concerns over Pakistan’s domestic cricket game’s decline have grown in response to this episode, as nepotism continues to impede the growth of young players around the nation.
Pakistan has now dropped to eighth in the ICC Test Rankings after losing five straight Test matches.
