Islamabad, Jan 2: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning for an intensified cold wave in Karachi starting Saturday, January 4. Westerly winds entering the country are expected to lower temperatures further after a brief decrease over the next two days.

Current Weather Conditions

  • Minimum temperature: 13.5°C
  • Humidity levels: 58%
  • Wind speed: 6 km/h from the north

Last month, Karachi experienced single-digit temperatures, with a low of 9.1°C, marking one of the coldest winters in recent years.

Air Quality Concerns

Karachi’s air quality remains a pressing issue. On December 31, 2024, the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 237 (“very unhealthy”), with PM2.5 pollutants measured at 162 µg/m³, exceeding WHO’s safe levels by 32.4 times.

The worsening air quality, combined with cold conditions, poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The incoming cold winds and deteriorating air quality underline the need for preparedness. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions against health risks associated with the harsh weather and pollution.
