Islamabad, Jan 11: The Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) has officially declared 2025 as the “Year of Gwadar”, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the city’s growth. This milestone comes as three landmark projects are set to launch under the Gwadar Smart Port City Master Plan, which is nearing completion of its first phase (2017–2025).

In a high-level meeting chaired by GDA Chairman Shafqat Anwar Shahwani, key decisions were made regarding the expansion of Gwadar’s urban development area to 118 square kilometers. Additionally, the East Bay Expressway will be connected to the New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA), further enhancing the city’s connectivity.

The Gwadar Smart Port City Master Plan, a joint initiative between Pakistan and China, was approved during the 9th Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting on November 5, 2019. The plan serves as the blueprint for the city’s rapid growth, with three major projects slated for development in 2025: the Central Business District (CBD), Gwadar Special Economic Zone (GSEZ), and NGIA.

The Central Business District (CBD), which spans 12.3 square kilometers, is one of the most significant projects. With an estimated cost of Rs 84–90 billion, the CBD is expected to generate an impressive Rs 400 billion in profits over the next 10 years. This development will play a crucial role in turning Gwadar into a major commercial hub. Additionally, environmental sustainability will be a key focus, with plans for a solar park and other energy solutions to ensure the city’s power needs are met.

The Gwadar Special Economic Zone (GSEZ) aims to boost trade and investment by creating tax-free zones, driving local economic growth and generating employment opportunities for the region. With these transformative projects, Gwadar is set to emerge as a key player in regional and international trade.

The year 2025 promises to be a turning point for Gwadar as it enters a new phase of urbanization, economic growth, and international collaboration. The GDA’s ambitious plans, backed by Pakistan’s partnership with China, will transform the city into a modern, thriving economic hub, positioning it as one of the most important centers for global trade in the region.
