Google is introducing new AI capabilities to Gmail to enhance user experience and streamline application management, according to a report from The Verge.

The tech giant is launching the Gemini side panel, a tool designed to summarize email threads and facilitate the composition of new emails. Google states that the web tool will offer “proactive prompts” and enable users to ask open-ended questions.

The Gemini side panel will also be accessible in Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, but exclusively to paid subscribers.

Formerly known as Duet AI, the Gemini 1.5 Pro-powered side panel in Docs allows users to draft and refine content, summarize information, and facilitate brainstorming by leveraging assistance from other files.

In Slides, the side panel aids in creating custom slides, generating images, presentations, and more.

For Sheets users, the side panel supports tracking and organizing data, assisting in table creation, formula generation, and task completion queries.

In Drive, users can utilize the Gemini side panel to summarize single or multiple documents and swiftly access project information.

In Gmail, the side panel aids in summarizing email threads, suggesting responses, posing queries, and retrieving specific information from emails in the inbox or from Google Drive files.
