Islamabad, Mar 17 2025: Google has officially announced that it will phase out Google Assistant in favor of its new AI-powered assistant, Gemini, on Android devices later this year.

The transition will take place gradually over the next few months, after which Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices or in app stores.

The company confirmed in a blog post that the transition extends beyond smartphones, with plans to introduce Gemini on tablets, in-car systems, smartwatches, headphones, and other connected devices.

Additionally, Google aims to bring a Gemini-powered experience to smart home devices, including speakers, displays, and TVs.

Until the migration is complete, Google Assistant will continue functioning on supported devices. Meanwhile, Google has been working on integrating key features from Assistant into Gemini.

Users can expect familiar functions such as playing music, setting timers, and performing quick actions directly from the lock screen features that had been among the most requested by Android users.

Pixel 9 Paved the Way for Gemini

Earlier this year, Google launched its Pixel 9 series with Gemini set as the default digital assistant.

The move signaled the company’s broader strategy to replace Assistant with a more advanced AI system capable of handling more complex queries and personalized interactions.

Google describes Gemini as a more intelligent and versatile digital assistant, leveraging generative AI to provide users with smarter, more interactive experiences.

The platform introduces features like Gemini Live and Deep Research, designed to offer more in-depth responses and proactive assistance across multiple devices.

What to Expect Next?

While Google has not provided an exact date for the complete transition, it assures users that updates and more details will be shared in the coming months.
