ISLAMABAD, AUGUST 1: Following many complaints alleging that power distribution firms (DISCOs) were overcharging customers, the federal government decided to extend the deadlines for electricity bills by ten days.
Following a thorough investigation of overbilling allegations from April to June 2024, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) released these conclusions. All DISCOs engaged in rampant overbilling, according to NEPRA’s study.

The Ministry of Energy has extended the deadline for paying power bills for July and August by ten days.

All DISCOs have been ordered by NEPRA to provide explanations and to make up for the financial hardship caused by excessive power rates on customers. If meter readings are lower, businesses must prorate their real bills. Pro-rata bill payments are not subject to late payment fees for customers, and those who have already made a payment will get adjustments.

In order to avoid average or estimated billing, NEPRA also mandated the quick repair of malfunctioning meters. It stated that in order to ensure correct invoicing and meter readings, businesses must adhere to the consumer service handbook and file compliance reports within 30 days.

In order to hold electricity firms responsible, the regulator is also carrying out independent procedures that might result in official investigations and fines. A thorough report is anticipated later.
