Security measures will be intensified at New York’s Eisenhower Park stadium ahead of the highly anticipated India versus Pakistan clash in the ICC T20 World Cup on June 9. This decision follows reports of threats to the match, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.
However, according to a statement from the governor’s office, there is currently no credible public safety threat. Eisenhower Park Stadium, situated 25 miles east of Manhattan, will host eight ICC T20 World Cup matches from June 3 to 12, including the showdown between the two Asian arch-rivals. Governor Kathy Hochul has affirmed her commitment to working with law enforcement authorities to ensure the smooth conduct of these games.
As reported by ESPNCricinfo, “I have also instructed the New York State Police to implement enhanced security measures, such as a greater presence of law enforcement, sophisticated surveillance, and rigorous screening procedures.”
According to information obtained by ESPNCricinfo, officials have not discovered any supporting proof for the alleged threat. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has declared that all venues will have “robust” security during the competition.
“Everyone’s safety and security at the event is our number one priority, and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place,” an ICC official stated. We have good links with the authorities in the nations where we are hosting, and we constantly observe and assess the world environment to make sure that the necessary precautions are taken against any threats to our event.”
India’s cricket team is set to play four matches in the US as part of the ICC T20 World Cup. Their schedule includes games against Ireland on June 5, Pakistan on June 9, the USA on June 12, and a final group stage match against Canada in Florida on June 15. The team, known as the Men in Blue, has already arrived in New York and commenced training. However, star player Virat Kohli is yet to join them as he is on a break following an outstanding performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), where he secured the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs with 741 runs in 15 games.
