Islamabad, Oct 28: Instagram Lowers Video Quality for Low-View Content. Have you ever noticed that although some of your Instagram videos seem clear, others appear blurry? In actuality, the popularity of your video on Instagram determines its quality.
In an Instagram AMA (Ask Me Anything), the company’s CEO, Adam Mosseri, gave an explanation of why some videos appear to be of higher quality than others. Mosseri claims that Instagram first displays the best quality videos. Because the majority of views happen early on, the platform will lower the quality of a movie if people don’t watch it frequently.
However, Instagram will reprocess the video in greater resolution if it receives more attention later. This strategy seeks to guarantee that extra processing power is only applied to videos that are doing better.
Although this may appear unjust to smaller producers, he reassured viewers that video quality has little bearing on engagement and that content, not quality, is the primary driver of engagement. This approach mirrors the way Instagram’s parent company, Meta, handles cross-platform video content management. Meta admitted in 2021 that it was getting harder to keep up with the increasing number of video uploads.
Meta begins by swiftly and efficiently encoding videos in order to deal with this. Higher-quality processing is only applied to videos that receive significant increases in viewing time. Because of the extra processing steps, the most watched videos end up looking the best.
This strategy is comparable to that of YouTube, where videos with fewer views frequently load more slowly and appear worse than those with more views, suggesting that the majority of YouTube’s traffic is going to the videos with fewer views.
