Islamabad, Sep 18: The government of Canada declared on Wednesday that it will tighten the requirements for work permits and further decrease the amount of study permits it grants to international students in an effort to minimize the number of temporary residents living in the nation.

This action is part of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government’s efforts to manage the growing number of temporary residents, including international students and foreign workers. The Liberal government is now trailing in public opinion polls and has recently suffered a significant by-election loss.

Due of a federal election that must take place in October 2025, this topic has gained considerable attention in Canadian politics. According to the recently disclosed modifications, fewer international study permits would be granted from 509,390 in 2023 to 437,000 by 2025.

In 2024, 175,920 permits had been issued by the first seven months. The changes would also limit temporary foreign workers’ and certain students’ spouses’ eligibility for work permits.
