Islamabad, Dec 19: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Sindh Assembly has called for urgent intervention by the provincial government to address the peril posed by over 570 buildings deemed dangerous across Karachi and other cities in Sindh. During a meeting chaired by Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, PAC members expressed concern over the Sindh Building Control Authority’s (SBCA) inability to enforce evacuations, despite the imminent risk to residents’ lives.

The SBCA revealed that numerous residents continue to occupy these hazardous structures, citing the lack of alternative accommodations as a significant obstacle to evacuation efforts. The PAC directed the chief secretary to implement immediate measures to vacate these dilapidated buildings, emphasizing the need to prevent avoidable tragedies.

The Director General of Audit, Sindh, criticized the SBCA for its failure to demolish or evacuate these structures, warning of catastrophic consequences should any of them collapse. He highlighted the urgency of relocating the thousands of people still residing in these unsafe environments.

According to the SBCA Director General, Karachi accounts for the majority of these buildings, with 570 classified as dangerous. Other affected cities include Hyderabad with 80 hazardous structures, Mirpurkhas with 81, Sukkur with 67, and Larkana with four. The PAC stressed that immediate action is essential to ensure public safety and prevent a potential disaster.
