ISLAMABAD, AUGUST 4: After more than 30 years in Karachi, a new industrial zone would be developed in the Surjani region, according to Syed Shujaat Hussain, Director General of the Karachi Development Authority (KDA).

He stated that the industrial zones would house new industrial units in cutting-edge structures, providing vital infrastructure and utilities to industries to cater to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). He was speaking as the chief guest at the Federal B Area Association of Trade and Industries (FBATI). The Surjani industrial zone is the name of the proposed industrial area, which will create jobs and economic activity for Karachi locals.

In the next three years, the Surjani industrial zone and the nearby residential societies would be built, according to DG KDA. He said that a private developer will make more than 500 plots, spanning from 500 to 2,000 acres, accessible for the establishment of industrial units. Due to deteriorating infrastructure and widespread corruption, Syed Raza Hussain, President of the Federal B Area Association of Trade and companies (FBATI), outlined the problems and difficulties that Karachi’s industrial zones and companies face.

He remarked that in order to preserve the efficient flow of both passenger and freight traffic, industrial zones’ key thoroughfares and crossroads should be developed. However, encroachments within industrial zones and along roadsides should also be immediately removed by the authorities. He made the argument that Karachi’s lack of infrastructure, particularly access to water, is harming the city’s economy and forcing industrial companies to migrate from Karachi to other Punjabi cities.

Babar Khan, CEO of FITE, proposed that the KDA designate a point of contact to handle industrialists’ concerns. He went on to say that the KDA ought to put up a one-window procedure for prompt issue resolution.
