Islamabad, Nov 22: The Karimabad Underpass project in Karachi, initiated in June last year, remains far behind schedule. Despite a two-year completion goal, only 20% of the work has been completed, compared to the expected 50%. Overseen by the Karachi Development Authority (KDA) under the Sindh Government, the project recently saw its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report approved, yet critical issues like traffic management, drainage, utility line relocation, and afforestation remain unaddressed.
Residents’ Complaints:
Locals expressed frustration over the project’s poor execution. Aamir Ali, a resident, criticized the slow progress and lack of proper traffic planning, causing severe transportation problems and dust pollution. Merchant Muhammad Aslam highlighted disrupted businesses due to unplanned alternative routes and encroachments, suggesting phased construction to ease congestion. Shoppers like Razia Sultana voiced concerns about bumpy alternative roads and unfenced construction sites, burdening locals and women navigating the area.
Traffic and Environmental Challenges:
A traffic police official described the underpass as a chokepoint, with poorly maintained alternative routes worsening congestion. Union Council Chairman Zubair Wali reported overflowing manholes due to non-relocated utility lines, damaging properties. Despite a Rs. 3.46 billion budget, basic needs like road repairs and site fencing remain neglected.
Criticism of Authorities:
Environmentalists and officials have condemned the KDA for failing to meet EIA requirements. SEPA Director Imran Sabir acknowledged the lack of fencing and lighting, while planner Dr. Syed Nawaz Al Hadi accused authorities of ignoring environmental and public welfare obligations.
The delays and mismanagement have left Karachi residents frustrated, demanding urgent action to complete the project efficiently.
